* Combined cycle fuel consumption figures used where possible (city and highway driving).

Driving for Fuel Efficiency

  • Avoid excessive acceleration
  • Keep within the speed limit
  • Reduce cargo weight if possible
  • Remove roof racks if not needed
  • Use cruise control on highways were possible
  • Change up gears as soon as practical
  • Turn off air conditioning if not needed
  • Check tyre pressure suits the speed and load of the vehicle. Too low tyre pressure uses more fuel.
  • Choose a fuel efficient vehicle suited to the intended transport purpose if possible.

Current High Fuel Efficiency Engine Design

  • Stop start engine automatic control. Engine stops when car stops. Engine starts when you want to resume. Volkswagen, Mazda and BMW use this technology.
  • Some of the smaller diesel engines can have the same fuel economy as a hybrid especially in highway driving.
  • Smart alternators that only engage when car is braking. GM and BMW use this technology.
  • Multi-port fuel injection. Each cylinder has its own injector better controlling fuel air mix.
  • Variable value technology. This improves efficiency across the engine speed range better.

Future Fuel Energy Efficiency

  • Tesla Roadster / S / X / 3 / Y have produced over 900,000 electric vehicles.
  • Global General Moters Volt/Ampera family electric car sales are over 134,500.
  • Mitsubishi eMiev is in production of thier electric car since July 2009. This car is being produced in the thousands.
  • Plug In Hybrid allow external charging of the batteries to allow electric driving initially. This suits shorter city commuting.
  • Electricity may come from coal or gas power stations today but may use renewable energy more in the coming decades.

No fuel Electric Car Tesla Roadster
This electric car has a range of 354 km (220 miles) and can reach 100 kph (60 mph) in 4 seconds. It has electric storage of 53 kWh.
